WHY AREN'T WE MAKING ROOM?
Given my professional focus on corporate strategy and in the boardroom, I recently asked myself this question and now ask you to consider: Why is it that we, across many industries, don’t prioritize making room in our boardrooms and conference rooms for our Veterans whose “performance return†is our opportunity to follow these dreams every day? They call on their intellect, strategic thinking, strength and grace under pressure, without hesitation or exhaustion, and failure has consequences which are far more definitive than financial results. These individuals have spent years solving problems, managing budgets, addressing complex issues and figuring things out in their military and government careers. How is it that outside of defense, aerospace and other “easy to connect the dots†industries, we are not taking advantage of this “Veteran Asset Class†when their skills, with just a little thought and collaboration, can be transformational to our economy? Senior military officers have daily faced critical issues like operational constraints and tradeoffs, risk management decisions, fiscal pressures, and uncertainty - often times in crisis when lives are literally in the balance. These officers have successfully led multiple and diverse large organizations in an environment where the highest ethical standards are a given. Vastly, they have significant experience in operations, strategic planning, IT, HR, and cyber defense. Military officers must, by design, be lifelong learners, able to make decisions with limited information.
After their military career, these senior officers can make valuable contributions in the boardroom. They are used to being collegial team players who value constructive debate. They think strategically, have a global perspective, and are comfortable with ambiguity. Senior military officers will enhance your Board, and directly contribute to the company's bottom line!
Barbara Faulkenberry is a VIP Member of Women in the Boardroom. She is retired from the United States Air Force as a Major General (2-stars) after a 32-year career. If you're looking for veterans or other experts in the boardroom, let us know about your corporate board opening here. We have qualified VIP Members who are ready to serve.
As we say goodbye to another year, don't forget to pause and reflect on your accomplishments from 2015. I recently did just that and I am so glad I did because it made me realize just how much we actually accomplished.
A few of mine include:
Matchmaking program
We launched this program at the end of last year as a benefit of our VIP Membership. Our members contribute companies to the master list where they are able to make a board connection for another VIP Member, and in turn, they receive connections to the companies they are interested in on the list. The list has surpassed my expectations! Not only does it range from 150 to 250 companies but the majority are public companies. Our Matchmaking program will be the game changer for women. The easiest way to explain it is to tell you that it is "golf for women".
Annual Board Assembly
This exclusive event doubled in attendance from 2014 and we received fantastic feedback from attendees. Watch video on what attendees thought of the Board Assembly here.
Board opening notifications
We sent out information on 44 open seats to VIP Members in 2015, including our latest opening for a private engineering company.
New membership levels
When we rolled out our membership platform 4+ years ago, we expected it to evolve with time but over the years I continue to learn from each and every one of you. We have a pretty significant amount of membership renewals year after year but we have realized that it is not "one size fits all" so we have added Unlimited Virtual Event Membership and a few more levels to VIP Membership. One VIP level is for those who want more coaching and another for those who do not desire the one-on-one coaching but still want to participate in the other benefits we include in the VIP program. Email us for more information on these new VIP levels.
Thank you to all who helped make these and our other VIP Membership benefits a success. If you are a senior-level executive woman who is interested in working toward a goal of corporate board service in 2016, set up a time to talk with me about how these benefits of VIP Membership can work for you.
